It’s no surprise that exercise is good for your heart, but are you aware of just how much exercise you need to stay heart healthy? Ideally, 30 minutes + a day of aerobic activity is best to stay in optimum heart health. With busy schedules, kids, work, and other obligations dedicating even that amount of time can seem like a daunting task. Wouldn’t it be great if getting the exercise we need wasn’t so difficult? Well, it might not be! 30 minutes of running, stair climbing, or aerobics is hard to figure into your day. But what about brisk walking? What about brisk walking while completing other tasks you already do? By this we mean parking further away from the store or work so that you have to walk an extra few minutes while running your errands or heading into work. You can also work some ‘cardio’ into your day by doing light grocery shopping with a basket rather than a cart so that you are working you muscles while carrying your things rather than pushing (careful with this one- only do this with light shopping or you may injure your back!). Even taking a 15 minute walk around the neighborhood after dinner with your significant other is a great way to unknowingly work a healthy habit into your daily routine. Not only will the activity get your heart pumping and strengthen those essential muscles, but the fresh air and time alone will also free up your mind. It truly is a win-win! More tips for a healthy lifestyle: Stretch you muscles several times a week to daily. Yoga is a great way to do this. The better you eat, the better you feel, the easier it is to get active! Combine your activity with a healthy diet. Join a gym or a activity club! When others around you have the same goals, you are more likely to stay on track. Start an activity plan slowly and steadily. Always consult your physician before starting a new exercise program.
